Shipping Container Maintenance Guide

Simple maintenance that keeps a shipping container weatherproof for decades — foundations and drainage, rust care, door and gasket service, roof checks, and ventilation.

Foundation and drainage

Most premature container corrosion starts underneath. Set the unit on railway ties, concrete blocks, or a gravel pad so air circulates under the floor and water drains away. Ground contact traps moisture against the bottom rails — the one placement mistake that meaningfully shortens container life.

The annual half-hour routine

  • Walk the roof line — clear debris and standing water
  • Wire-brush and touch up any rust-through spots with rust-inhibiting paint
  • Wipe door gaskets and check they still compress evenly
  • Grease door hinges and lock rods
  • Check floor for soft spots and reseal penetrations

Condensation control

Temperature swings condense moisture on interior steel ("container rain"). For sensitive contents, add passive vents, desiccant, or insulation. Simply cracking doors periodically in dry weather also helps in most storage applications.
